Cinderella: Grimm brothers vs. Disney
Disney version.
The Grimm Brother’s version of the Fairy Tale ‘Cinderella’ is about a young girl named Cinderella whose mother passes away. Her father then remarries a terrible woman who has two wicked stepdaughters. When Cinderella’s father is absent her evil stepmother and sisters force her to do all of the household chores. Word then comes that the King is throwing a three day festival in honour of the Prince to find him a suitable wife. To guarantee Cinderella
does not attend her stepmother assigns her an incredible amount of chores as a condition to attend. Although Cinderella completes her chores her stepmother and sisters leave to go to the ball without her. However with the help of her bird friends she is provided with a beautiful dress and attends the festival. Whilst at the ball the Prince falls in love with
Cinderella but she leaves just before midnight on night one, two and three. On the third night Cinderella leaves her shoe behind The next day the Prince searches for the girl who fits the shoe and when he does he and Cinderella
Marry.
The Grimm Brother’s ‘Cinderella’ was first published in 1812. Their fairy tale is useful as it helps me and other to analyse the different adaptations that were made to Cinderella over time. Over the years authors have continued rewriting Cinderella similar to the
Brother Grimm’s original version. However other versions that I have read and been exposed to have purposely left out violent elements such as the step sisters cutting of part of their feet to fit into the glass slipper and the birds pecking out their eyes at the end. This shows that perhaps, there may have been a negative reaction to the violence portrayed in the Grimm Brothers fairy tales.
There is no disagree that some of the Grimm Brothers tales are more graphic than others and it is understandable as to why Disney recreated the dales to make them more family and child friendly. Although I was never fully interested in the Grimm Brothers versions of the tales it is interesting to read through and compare the pair of tales from both Grimm and Disney.
